Administrative history
The School of Nursing at the Toronto Western Hospital was established in 1896. The first Superintendent, Miss Annie Reid, served 1896-1897. The School’s first class was admitted in April 1896 and graduated in 1898. From 1896-1899 the education program was for 2 years, including a three-month probationary period. In 1899 the program was expanded to three years.
Miss Hudson (1897), Miss Underhill (1897), Miss Carrie Vander Water (1898), Miss McArthur (1899), Miss Buckley (1899), Miss Jean Smedley (1900-1907), Georgina Woodland (1907-1910), Miss Sarah Bell (1910-1915) and Miss Kathleen Scott (1915) served as Superintendent of the School during its early years.
In 1915 Miss Beatrice Ellis was appointed Director of Nursing and Principal of the School, serving (with a brief hiatus resulting from ill health 1920-1923) until her retirement in September 1943. During Miss Ellis’s absence, Misses Hiscox and McKee administered the School.
In 1936 the process of amalgamation linking Grace Hospital with the TWH was completed and the TWH School of Nursing subsumed the functions of the Grace Hospital Training School for Nurses.
From September 1943 to September 1945, and again from 1949-1951 the School was directed by Gladys J. Sharpe. During Miss Sharpe’s absence to pursue higher education, Myrtle I. Graham served (September 1945-1948) as Principal of the School.
In 1950 a grant was received from the Atkinson Foundation for Nursing Education: the School was renamed the Atkinson School of Nursing of the Toronto Western Hospital and at the same time became independent of the TWH Department of Nursing with the appointment of a Director of Nursing Service to head the Department, while Miss Sharpe became Director of Nursing Education, in charge of the School.

Administrative history
In 1950 the Toronto Western Hospital School of Nursing was renamed the Atkinson School of Nursing of the Toronto Western Hospital when a grant was received from the Atkinson Foundation for Nursing Education. At the same time the School became independent of the Toronto Western Hospital's Department of Nursing with the appointment of a Director of Nursing Service to head the Department, while Miss Gladys J. Sharpe became Director of Nursing Education, in charge of the School.
From 1950-1955 a pilot program was carried out at the School, by which the education program was reduced from three years to two years and a one-year internship. In 1955 this change was adopted permanently.
Following Miss Sharpe’s retirement in 1951, Blanche Duncanson (1951-1958) and Amy Griffin (1958 - ?) served as Director of Nursing Education. Beginning in 1972 the Atkinson School of Nursing was gradually phased out of independent existence, and in 1974 the School was formally dissolved and its functions transferred to George Brown College.
