History
The Toronto Branch of the World Federalists of Canada is an organization whose objective is to achieve a lasting peace through a world federation of states, nations and peoples, after the manner of regional and national federations.
It was founded in 1945 as the World Government Association - Toronto Chapter and was formalized in 1949 with the election of an executive that included Joy Kennedy as its first president. Other independent groups emerged in Ottawa, Montreal, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and elsewhere at the same time, but early attempts at a national organization were not successful. These groups worked independently, yet in conjunction with each other. In 1951, these local groups coalesced to form a national organization, the World Federalists of Canada, now known as the World Federalist Movement - Canada.
The Toronto Chapter is local in focus, publishing bulletins for its members, providing news of organizations outside of Canada that are promoting world government and news of other chapters in Ontario. It sponsors talks, holds meetings and attempts to make inroads into Parliament using connections to promote the idea of world federalism.
Membership in the Toronto Branch is open to all members in good standing of the World Federalist Movement - Canada who reside in the Toronto area. Government and management of the organization is vested in a board of directors.
