History
Discussion for the formation of an Appeal Committee started in 1963, but the formal creation of the Woodstock United Appeal Association did not occur until early 1964. The goal of the Association was to help provide funding for participating philanthropic organizations in the County in order to help cover their operating expenses. In doing so, these organizations created joint campaigns for public funding to help minimize the number of appeals and to ease the pressure on individuals to donate to a number of causes. During the first campaign, $55,000 was raised, which was used to support 7 Member Agencies.
The provisional board of the Woodstock United Appeal Association was headed by Peter Smith, Woodstock Hospital Administrator; and the formal board, created in 1964 and consisting of a 15-member body, was headed by Harold R. Henderson.
Participating agencies included the YWCA, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Canadian Arthritic and Rheumatism Society, St. John’s Ambulance, Navy League, Multiple Sclerosis, Senior Citizens, YMCA, Victorian Order of Nurses and John Howard Society.
The name was subsequently changed to Woodstock and District United Way in 1985 and in 1995 the name was changed to United Way of Oxford.
