History
Mary Wood (1908-1989) was an extraordinarily civic and community-minded individual who was devoted to preserving her community’s past and was best known as “Woodbridge’s Unofficial Historian”. Born Mary Isabel Hollingshead, she was a life-long resident of Woodbridge, Ontario she attended Weston Collegiate and graduated in 1923. In 1931, she married James Alvin Wood and worked on the family dairy farm until 1944. She played a significant role in the compilation of the books A History of Vaughan Township (1971) and A History of Vaughan Township Churches (1984) and in 1984, she authored her own work, Pictorial Woodbridge. She held memberships with a variety of organizations including the Vaughan Township Historical Society, the Burwick Women’s Institute, the Woodbridge Horticultural Society, the Woodbridge Senior Citizens, and the King-Vaughan Support Service. In 1986, she received the provincial award of Senior Citizen of the year from Lieutenant-Governor Lincoln Alexander in recognition of her significant contributions to her community.
