        History

        The Department of Surgery at Women's College Hospital was established in 1915. Dr. Minerva Reid was appointed Chief of Surgery (1915-1926). By 1920, the Department was performing approximately 500 operations per year.

        Dr. Reid was succeeded by Dr. Edna Guest (1926-1931), Dr. Kathleen Bartley (1931-1946), Dr. Jessie Gray (1946-1964), Dr. Marjorie Davis (1965-1976), Dr. Robert D. Henderson (1976-1988), and Dr. Lavina Lickley (1988-1999).

        In 1998, Women's College Hospital merged with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. B. Goldman, the Chief of Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre became Chief of Surgery for the amalgamated Sunnybrook & Women's College Health Sciences Centre. In 2001, Dr. R. Richards took over as Chief of Surgery.

        In 2006, Women's College Hospital once again became an independent institution. Dr. R. Richards remained Chief of Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. John Semple was appointed Chief of Surgery at Women's College Hospital (2006-2016). He was succeeded by Dr. David Urbach (2016-present).
