History
The Department of Obstetrics, one of the first departments at Women's College Hospital and Dispensary, was established in 1911. Dr. Rowena Hume was appointed Chief of Obstetrics (1911-1926). The Department of Gynecology was established as a separate program in 1920. Dr. Jennie Gray Wildman served as Chief of Gynecology (1920-1926).
In 1926, the two departments merged to become the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Marion Kerr was appointed Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1926-1947). She was succeeded by Dr. Marion Hilliard (1947-1956).
On February 15, 1956, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology became the first department at Women's College Hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto as a teaching department. In 1957, Dr. Geraldine Maloney became Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1957-1966).
In 1966, Dr. Walter Hannah was appointed Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1966-1986). He was the first male doctor to be appointed chief of any medical department in the history of Women's College Hospital. He was succeeded by Dr. Jerry Shime (1986-1999), who held the position of Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology until Women's College Hospital amalgamated with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
Although the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was formally moved to the Sunnybrook site during the amalgamation, the perinatal and gynecological program continued to operate out of the Women's College site until 2010. In September 2010, the remaining mothers and newborns were transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Approximately 175,000 babies were delivered at Women's College Hospital from 1911-1999.
Women's College Hospital de-amalgamated from Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in 2006. A Department of Gynecology was re-established and Dr. Jennifer Blake was appointed Chief (2006-2010). After she left, Dr. Jerry Shime served as Interim Chief (2010-2011). He was succeeded as Chief of Gynecology by Dr. Lisa Allen (2011-present).
Today, the Department of Gynecology at Women's College Hospital operates a number of programs, including: the Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Clinic, the Equity Clinic for Refugees, the Familial Ovarian Cancer Clinic, the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Clinic, the Urogynecology Program, and the Young Women's Gynecology Clinic.
