The Department of Laboratories was established in 1920. Dr. Vivian Marvin Laughlen was appointed Chief of Laboratories (1920-1945). She was succeeded by Dr. Eva Mader MacDonald (1945-1952), Dr. Alice Gray (1952-1980), and Dr. Ali H. Qizilbash (1980-1981).
In 1981, the Department of Laboratories was divided into two separate departments: the Department of Clinical Laboratories and the Department of Pathology. Dr. Lynn From was appointed Chief of Pathology (1981-1992). She was succeeded by Dr. Wedad Hanna in 1992.
In 2006, the Department of Pathology was again divided into two departments: the Department of Anatomic Pathology and the Department of Clinical Pathology. Dr. Wedad Hanna became Chief of Anatomic Pathology.
Also in 2006, Women's College Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre de-amalgamated. However, they continued to share a Department of Pathology. The current Chief of Anatomic Pathology for both Women's College Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is Dr. Nadia Ismiil.
