        History

        Michael Wladyka was born in 1918 in Oshawa. His parents came to Canada from the Ukraine where they met and were married in Port Hope, 1915. His parents frequently brought him to Port Hope on weekends. He graduated from Oshawa Vocational Institute and joined the Canadian Armed Forces shortly after. He served with the Queen's Own Rifles in the European Theatre during World War II. He returned to Canada in 1946 and in 1950 bought the Queen's Hotel in Port Hope along with his brother Bill. In 1955 Wladyka ran for town council and was elected for two terms. In 1957 he ran for Deputy Reeve and served in that office and on County Council for the next three years. Wladyka then ran successfully for the position of Mayor in 1967 and served, with a two-year exception, until 1978. Wladyka was also involved with the community in several different ways. During his time as mayor, he was elected as President of the Association of Mayors and Reeves in 1970, and as President of the Small Urban Municipalities in 1972. He also served as charter President of the East Durham Historical Society in 1963. He has also served as President of the Port Hope Kiwanis Club, Chairman of the Port Hope Library Board, President of the Port Hope Cancer Society, Director of the Port Hope Chamber of Commerce, and as Elder and Sunday school teacher of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. Wladyka and his wife Mary had three boys during their marriage, Daniel, Michael Jr. and David. He died Aug 2002 and was buried in Union Cemetery.
