Biographical history
William Moyer Swartley (1927-1979), therapist and psychologist was born and educated in the United States. He later studied in Switzerland at the Jung Institute and in India at the University of Benaras before returning to the US and the University of the Pacific where he obtained the PhD (1959). He opened the first Center for the Whole Person in Philadelphia in 1963, later opening branches in New York, Toronto, and London (U.K.). In 1973 he founded the International Primal Association. Swartley was instrumental in introducing the novel therapy techniques (primal, encounter groups, etc) for popular consumption in the 1960s.

The fonds documents William Moyer Swartley's academic career and research activities in the field of psychology. The fonds also includes personal records. Access is partially restricted. Researchers wishing access to the William Moyer Swartley fonds must sign the Access and Use Agreement form before access is granted. Written permission for access to closed material must be obtained from Anne Swartley, and be directed to the Archivist, York University. The following files are restricted: Accession 1979-015: Box 4 (files 109-122); Box 10 (file 188); Box 11 (file 193); Box 22 (files 520-522). Accession 1979-016: both films are closed. Accession 1979-017: Box 1 (files 1-3).
