Biographical history
William Kirby (1817-1906), best known as the author of the Golden Dog, was a newspaper editor and local politician in the Niagara area of Ontario in the nineteenth century.

Fonds consists mainly of correspondence with authors and political figures. Fonds also includes diaries, commercial records, scrapbooks, newspapers, periodicals, as well as some maps and photographs.

Immediate source of acquisition
The William Kirby fonds was acquired from the Kirby Estate by the Niagara Parks Commission in 1944-45, and a portion of this fonds came into the possession of the Archives of Ontario in January of 1951.

Most of the fonds is available on microfilm (the microfilm number is MS 542). The following sub-series are not available on microfilm for varying reasons: D-31, D-32, E-2, E- 28, E-31, E- 36.
