Biographical history
Walter Bernard Williston was born on September 3rd, 1919, in Chengdu, China, to Woodbury B. Williston and Lilian Shilton. He returned to Canada in 1928, where he attended North Bay Collegiate and later the University of Toronto, where he received a BA degree in 1941. He then enrolled at Osgoode Hall Law School, articling with Grey Hamilton in 1941-1942 and later with Fasken, Robertson, Aitchison, Pickup and Calvin in Toronto. He was called to the Bar in 1944. Williston worked as a full-time lecturer at Osgoode Hall Law School in 1948-49, returning to legal practice with the Fasken firm in 1949. He was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1954. In 1957, Williston was head of the Civil Procedure section of the newly created Bar Admission Course offered through the Law Society of Upper Canada. His association with the Law Society included his work as a bencher from 1961 to 1977 and as a life bencher from 1977 to 1980. Williston was a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan, the International Commission of Jurists, the Canadian Bar Association, the Wellington County Law Association, the County of York Law Association, the Medico-Legal Society, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Advocates' Society. Walter Williston died in Toronto on August 22nd, 1980.
