    Administrative history

    The Village of Highgate, Kent County, Ontario was incorporated in 1917 under the terms of the Baldwin Act, Chapter 81, Canada Statutes, 1849. As an incorporated village, lower tier municipality, it had an elected council consisting of an elected Reeve and councillors. Its responsibilites related to delivery of services such as streets and utilities. It had the power to raise money through direct taxation on land and through the use of debentures. Under the provisions of Bill 26, the Savings and Restructuring Act, 1996, Highgate was amalgamated into the new Municipality of Chatham-Kent effective January 1, 1998.

    Fonds consists of minute book (prior to incorporation),council minutes, by-laws, assessment rolls, tax collectors rolls,hydro commission records (1919-1976),cash books and ledgers.
