The Vice Chief of the Defence Staff was established in 1964. This post is responsible for directing and coordinating planning and operational readiness. The VCDS reports to the Chief of the Defence Staff.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of Vice Chief of the Defence Staff Instructions. They originate from the National Defence Headquarters and cover a wide range of subjects and issues. Also includes a quarterly progress report regarding the Canadian Patrol Frigate project in 1990; and a brief on North American Air Defence Command (NORAD) treating nuclear weapons control; present US programme changes 1966-70; and Canadian studies in Air Defence. Fonds is comprised of the following series:
