The President is the chief executive officer of the University of Western Ontario and is accountable to the Board of Governors for the management of the University’s human, financial and physical resources; and for providing leadership in the University’s planning, academic, research, development and fund-raising activities. The President is responsible for the general supervision and direction of academic programs, research, faculty, staff and students; is the chief spokesperson for the University; represents the University in local, provincial, national and international communities; serves as a member, ex officio, of the Board of Governors; and makes recommendations to the board for appointments, functions of duties of the Vice-Presidents, Deans, Department Chairs, Registrar, University Librarian, and Secretary of the Senate. The President is also the Vice-Chancellor of the University, and it that capacity serves as chair of the Senate, ex officio, and member of other committees and sub-committees as determined by the Senate. With the passage of the Western University of London Act in April, 1908, the province of Ontario authorized the establishment of the University’s first Board of Governors and the ex officio Board position of President. The Board appointed Nathaniel C. James as the University’s first President on September 18, 1908. He served until 1914.
