Administrative history
The University of Western Ontario Athletic Association was founded in 1915 as the result of the amalgamation of various independent groups, including Western’s Arts Association and Medical School. The U.W.O. Athletic Association was a unified body encouraging and administering athletics at various levels throughout the University. Its main functions were to promote, finance and control all athletic sports carried on under the auspices of The University of Western Ontario. The U.W.O.A.A. was supported by Western’s Board of Governors and was given the mandate to administer athletic fees and finance intramural sports. The Athletic directorate was the executive committee of the Athletic Association and was responsible for preparing and submitting budgets, and monitoring internal revenue and gate receipts. The association also promoted amateurism, as well as participation and inclusion of all university students in sports related activities and clubs. They were responsible for the creation of participation awards and approved all scheduling of events and the use of athletic facilities. Under the guidance of the association, Western’s team colours were adopted, athletic events and clubs were sponsored, and varsity sports were expanded to include both women’s and men’s teams in a wide variety of sports. In May 1974, the Athletic Association was officially dissolved and the new Faculty of Physical Education became the official representative of sports at Western.
