        History

        The medical administration of the University Health Network is the responsibility of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), which is accountable to the Board.

        Duties of the MAC include:
        • Supervising and overseeing, on behalf of the Board, the quality of the medical care provided within the hospital including issues related to the process of care delivery, clinical outcomes, and utilization of Hospital facilities and resources;
        • Receiving, considering and acting upon recommendations from the Credentials Committee;
        • Appointing Medical Staff members of all Joint, Standing and Special Committees of the MAC and to name their Chairs;
        • And making recommendations to the Board regarding appointments and reappointments to the Medical Staff, hospital privileges, Medical Staff Bylaws and Policies, and disciplinary actions concerning Medical Staff.

        The MAC of UHN succeeded the MAC of The Toronto Hospital when TTH changed its name to University Health Network in 1999.

        The position of Chair of the UHN MAC has been held by Dr. A. Sandler (1999), Dr. C. Cardella (2000-2005), Dr. C. Chan (2006-2008), Dr. R. Gilbert (2009-2011), Dr. F. Habal (2012-2014) and Dr. M. Gardam (2015- ).
