The United States Joint Chiefs of Staff was established in 1947. It serves collectively as the principal military adviser of the President, National Security Council, and Secretary of Defense. Prepares strategic plans; reviews major material, personnel, and logistical requirements of the armed forces; and formulates policies for joint training.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of photocopied records regarding the activities of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff for 1946-1964. There are correspondence, memoranda and working drafts concerning North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military affairs. The 2007 accession consists of copies of the records of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for 1946-1958. These files are mixed in with other US Western Hemisphere Continental Defence files dealing with Canada-United States military relations, defence, air defence, emergency defence plans, military cooperation and security. Also includes the defence of Central and South America as regards to the Act of Chapultipec.

Fonds was received from the U.S. Archives and Records Administration in May 2003.
The 12 CDs were photographed by Richard Goette, Doctoral Candidate, Department of History, Queen’s University in July 2007 and donated to the DHH Archives in August 2007. The contents of the CDs were printed and filed in 2008-2009.
