History
The records in this collection have been brought together under the mission of the Making Room for Women Project at the United Church of Canada. This project, started in 2005, seeks to identify, collect and preserve records of women in the United Church of Canada as well as the organizations in which they participated. Throughout history, women have always played an active role in church life and organization; although, they have not always been recognized. With the rise of feminism during the 20th century, the work of women in the church is now being acknowledged, and there has developed a need to document the lives, leadership and struggles of these women. Scholarly interest in the organizations created and run for/by women, like Movement for Christian Feminism, the Ecumenical Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women, Centre for Christian Studies and the Women’s Missionary Society, is rising. As these women leaders are aging, the need to document these histories is ever more pressing. It is therefore the goal of this project to identify these women and document their experiences for the archives in the form of personal papers, organization records and oral histories.
