History
Trinity United Church, located at 21 Arthur St N in Elmira, was established in 1971 with the amalgamation of Wesley United Church and Zion United Church in Elmira. The congregation formed part of Elmira-West Montrose Pastoral Charge until the West Montrose congregation closed in 2005. It is still an active congregation of the United Church of Canada.
Wesley United Church in Elmira was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. The first Methodist church in Elmira was built in 1855. It formed part of the Elmira Methodist Circuit with Conestogo and WInterbourne. In 1873 a new church was built at Arthur Street and it was at that time the church was renamed Wesley Methodist Church. The congregation joined the United Church of Canada in 1925 and formed part of a three-point pastoral charge with Conestogo and West Montrose. In 1960 a new church was constructed and the old one became an auction house. On July 1, 1971, Wesley United Church amalgamated with Zion United Church in Elmira to form Trinity United Church in the former Zion church. The Wesley building was sold to the Elmira Missionary Church.
Zion United Church was established in 1968, formerly Evangelical United Brethren. The Zion Evangelical Association congregation was formed ca. 1867. The church was built in 1870. It formed part of the Elmira Circuit along with North Woolwich and Floradale. In 1922, the church became Zion Evangelical Church, and in 1946, it became Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church. The congregation joined the United Church in 1968. In 1971, it amalgamated with Wesley United Church to form Trinity United Church.
