Administrative history
Malahide Township forms part of the County of Elgin in Southwestern Ontario. It lies between Yarmouth and Bayham Townships, and is bounded on the north by South Dorchester and on the south by Lake Erie. The Township of Malahide was originally organized in 1810 and named by the Crown land agent Thomas Talbot in honour of the Castle of Malahide near his birthplace in Ireland. The Township of Malahide became a constituent part of Elgin County when the County was incorporated in 1852. On January 1st, 1998, the Township of Malahide amalgamated with the former Township of South Dorchester and the former Village of Springfield to form part of a new municipality called the Township of Malahide, which functions politically as a lower-tier municipality within the County of Elgin.
