This Committee was originally named the Special Drugs and Pharmacy Committee. In 1969 its name was changed to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
The Committee was authorized to make recommendations to the Medical Advisory Board re: the addition and deletion of drugs from the TGH Formulary and the placement of drugs on the “restricted” list; policies and procedures governing the handling of investigational drugs and investigational drug studies at the TGH; guidelines for pharmaceutical manufacturers’ representatives at the TGH; medication lists A, B, C at TGH.
Under its terms of reference (see Appendix III, Minutes February 18, 1974):
<blockquote>“The Committee shall recommend the adoption or assist in the formulation of broad professional policies regarding evaluation, selection, procurement, distribution, use, safe practices, and other matters pertinent to drugs in the TGH. The Committee shall recommend or assist in the formulation of programmes designed to meet the needs of the professional staff (Doctors, Nurses and Pharmacists) for complete current knowledge on matters related to drugs and drug practices.”</blockquote>
Dr. W.T.W. Clarke ([1968?]-1971), Dr. W.A. Mahon (1972- une 1983), and Dr. S. Teasdale (October 1983- ) chaired the Committee.
