This series consists of meeting minutes for the Municipal Council for the Town and City of Fort William. Comprehensive indexes compiled by staff at the City Clerk’s office provide access to the various issues discussed at council meetings.

Frederick O. Robinson was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on Aug. 2, 1903. He attended public and high school in Port Arthur and then served his apprenticeship to the machinist trade in the C.N.R. shops. He worked for 25 years as a skilled machinist in the Port Arthur shops of the C.N.R. until his election to the Ontario legislature in 1943. He continued to work as a C.N.R. machinist between sessions of the legislature, and after his election to the office of mayor, he worked in the C.N.R. shops on weekends.

He entered public life in January 1943 when he was elected to the Port Arthur Board of Education. In August of the same year he was elected to the Ontario legislature as C.C.F. member for Port Arthur. He was M.L.A. for Port Arthur until his defeat in 1951. In civic affairs, he remained on the Board of Education until 1946 when he was elected as alderman. In 1949, he became Mayor of Port Arthur; he remained in this post except for 1952 when he was defeated until 1955 when he resigned to become personnel manager for the Public Utilities Commission. He left active political life at this time. He resigned from the Public Utilities Commission in 1966 because of ill health. In July, 1969, he died.

The Frederick O. Robinson fonds comprises 7 feet of correspondence, clippings, pamphlets, articles and other material and is contained in seventeen transfer cases. The folder titles in the main are those designated by Mr. Robinson. Some re-arrangement of the material has been effected in order to comply with the folder titles. Since the folders themselves were in no apparent order when .they were donated to the university, the following arrangement was thought to be most suitable for research purposes:

Materials related to the architectural history of Lakehead University, as presented at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.

Fonds consists of union board minutes, of Hornepayne Union Church, 1921-1922; records, including baptisms, 1923-1957, marriages, 1923-1956, burials, 1926-1956, of Hornepayne Pastoral Charge (includes Hornepayne Union Church, Hornepayne, Longlac, Stevens, Caramat).

This series consists of index books for the Fort William Council. Each index is filed by year and contains an alphabetic order of topics with references to the page number where the topic was recorded in the Council Minute Book.

Series consists of five volumes of Committee Minutes and one Index booklet.

The first volume (TBA4262-01) contains minutes for a number of Council Committees. At the inaugural meeting dated Jan. 10, 1921, the Nominating Committee appointed members to several committees, including Finance, Utilities, Works, Fire, Water & Light, License & Relief, Property & Market, Claims, Health, Swimming Pool, Band and Industrial and Entertainment. Minutes for some of the aforementioned committees are recorded in this volume. Other committee minutes included are the Joint Meetings of City Council, Council of the Board of Trade and the Executive of the Trades & Labor Party, the Efficiency Committee, the Special Committee regarding the Grand Trunk Pacific Agreement, the Special Committee regarding Hydro, Cemetery Investment, Special Committee re Plumbing, Special Committee re Conditions at the Abbatoir, Great Lakes Paper, C.P.R re Building of a Hotel and the Loch Lomond Watershed Committee. In 1930, the Industrial Commission was formed. This Committee was composed of members from the Industrial Committee, the Joint Board of Trade and the Trades and Labour Council. Their minutes are also included in this volume. Minutes end on May 4, 1933.

The second volume (TBA4262-02) contains minutes of the Civic Industrial Board. Pursuant to a resolution of council, this Board was elected by ballot. At the first meeting held on February 1,1950, the main objectives of this board were outlined. They were to explore the possibilities of bringing industry to the City, to assist in local industrial concerns and to explore and study existing industrial sites for perspective firms. Minutes end on October 22, 1954.

The third volume contains minutes of the Land Development Committee, commencing with the third meeting dated March 4, 1954. This committee dealt with a number of items, including housing projects, school sites, property purchases, subdivisions and zoning changes. Committee members' names were recorded at the beginning of each year. In 1958, it appears the City Land Development Committee changed its name to the Development & Industrial Committee.

Volumes 4 (TBA4262-04) and 5 (TBA4262-05) continue to contain minutes of the abovenoted Committee. In 1962, the Committee's name changed to the Industrial & Promotion Committee. The last meeting date is January 21, 1965.

The final item (TBA4262-06) is an alphabetical index to the Minutes of the Industrial & Promotion Committee for 1962 to 1965.

Consists of photographs of particularly mining development in Northwestern Ontario in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as the waterfront and shipping, local scenery, and notable figures. Also includes some correspondence; railway construction plans.

The collection consists of photo albums, photographs, newspaper clippings, assets, agreements, stocks, bonds, certificates, correspondence, miscellaneous items, and two videos with the same recording. The collection is composed of three sous-fonds:

Einar and Hilma Kajander were immigrants from Finland, and were active in local organizations. Their son Art was a lawyer, and later Finnish Consul. Grandchild Ann is faculty at Lakehead University.

These photographs depict the Kajander family and their friends, in and about the Port Arthur area, approximately 1900 to 1970. The photographs include studio portraits and candid photographs printed at a variety of sizes. The images primarily depict family life and outdoor recreation.

Einar Kajander (1882-1973) and Hilma (Muhonen) Kajander (1886-1965) met in Canada and married in Port Arthur in 1909. Einar worked as a miner, and later opened a grocery store in Port Arthur. Both were involved with local sports organizations and the Finnish Labour Temple, and Hilma sang in Oras Choir.

Aatto Arthur Kajander (1913-1998) attended university in Toronto, was a lawyer in Thunder Bay for 55 years, and served as Finnish Consul appointed in 1957. He was also heavily involved in music and outdoor activities.

The Lake Superior Voyage Diary fonds consists of a diary written by an unknown author detailing a trip to Fort William on Lake Superior.

Lakehead University evolved from the Lakehead Technical Institute (LTI), which was established in 1946. From LTI, Lakehead became the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology in 1956. The Lakehead University Act was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in 1965, and Lakehead University was established. The first degrees granted by Lakehead University were in Arts and Science in 1965.

The Lakehead University fonds includes records of administrative offices and former administrators.

These are the records of the Chief Librarian (University Librarian) of Lakehead University (Lakehead Technical Institute, Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology.)

The records document the management and administration of the Lakehead University Library, including the construction of the Library building, policies, acquisitions, staffing, and more. Correspondence provides insight into the workings of the library during a period of library and academic expansion, computerization and transition.

The Chief Librarian had a significant role as a member of University administration, and participated on Faculty Council, Senate, and numerous committees. Records here reflect those bodies and their work throughout this time period, including proposed and new programs, enrollment, new construction, governance, and long range planning.

The Library's role in partnership with other organizations provincially, nationally, and internationally is also represented. Many libraries were adopting new technologies at this time, which allowed for more communications and cooperation, on projects including computerized cataloguing and inter-library loan.

The time period covered in these records includes major developments and changes within Lakehead University, and in the cultures and technologies of universities and libraries.

Marshall Blanchard Dean was an early physician in Fort William; his son Marshall Macdougall Dean had a career with the Canadian Coast Guard and a lifelong interest in history and genealogy. Collection includes correspondence, photographs, and research materials.
