Notice biographique
Thomas R. Brophey, born in 1908, held a diverse range of high profile positions in Windsor, Ontario. He began his journalistic career in 1924, working for the Border Cities Star and the Windsor Star, and became a popular columnist and reporter. Brophey abandoned journalism to study law at Osgoode Hall. Moving into municipal politics, he served as alderman of Ward 1 in 1944-1945 and Controller in 1946-1947. Thomas Brophey made a bid for mayor in 1948, but lost to incumbent Mayor Arthur Reaume. Perhaps the best remembered episode of his political endeavours was his abbreviated career as mayor in 1951. The local election of 6 December, 1950 saw Brophey triumph over Reaume. A recount requested by his opponent revealed Brophey lost by sixteen votes, forcing him to vacate the Mayoralty eight days after his inauguration. Brophey resumed what proved to be a successful legal career and formed a partnership with his son, Tom Brophey Jr. Brophey's last project was the acquisition of property for the E.C. Row Expressway. Thomas R. Brophey died 6 March, 1987 at the age of 79.
