    Biographical history

Thomas Nightingale (fl. 1881-1882) was a land speculator who travelled through present-day Manitoba and Minnesota in the summer of 1881. He visited the Big Pembina Valley, Brandon, Portage, Duluth, Collingwood, and Winnipeg. Nightingale returned to Ontario in the spring of 1882.

    Custodial history

    Scope and content

Fonds consists of photocopies of both the original diary of Thomas Nightingale and a typescript of this diary. The diary records Nightingale's daily activities during the summer of 1881 and spring of 1882 individual diary entries relate to: the weather, particularly flooding in and around Winnipeg; interactions with individuals along his travelling route, including settlers, Mennonite communities, and natives; the landscape along the travel route; hunting and fishing; sites where overnight stops were made (often giving information as to specific lots and owners); and inspections of lots and property sales.
