History
The Terryberry family originated in Landschaft, Switzerland under the last name Durrenbergers (Derrenbergers). The Durrenbergers family arrived in America on September 11, 1738 in western New Jersey. Once in North America the family changed the name to Terryberry. The descendants of Stephen Terryberry migrated from New Jersey; John Terryberry moved to Grimsby in 1805 and William Terryberry to Glanford in 1815. William Terryberry (1779-1847) established the Terryberry Inn on Mohawk Trail in the early 1800’s which was used as a centre for many community activities. In 1856, Jacob Terryberry constructed the family’s second inn south of Ryckman’s Corners.
Through marriages, the Terryberry family became connected to several other prominent families. William Terryberry married Anne Young on October 31, 1799. The couple had 9 children: A. Terryberry, George Terryberry, Isaac Terryberry, Jacob Terryberry (1806-1885), Horace Terryberry, Sophia Terryberry, Margaret Terryberry (1807-1882), David Terryberry, and Mary Terryberry.
To commemorate the history of the Terryberry family and their legacy within Hamilton and Dundas the Hamilton Library board decided to name the new library at the corner of West Fifth Street and Mohawk after the family. While the board narrowed the choices down to three different families, untimely the decision was given to a group of children in the building that day.
