        History

        Donald Matheson Sutherland was born near Norwich on December 3, 1879 to Dr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald Sutherland. He attended school in Norwich and Woodstock before graduating from the University of Toronto with a degree in medicine in 1903. During the First World War he served overseas, heading A Company 1st Battalion CEF in France, where he was wounded and returned to Canada. Later he took the 71st Battalion (which he formed) back to France and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for the achievements of his battalion. He would later enter into a career in politics as Minister of National Defence in the Bennett Cabinet from 1930-1934 and Minister of Pensions and National Health from 1934-1935. Appointed to the Queen’s Privy Council of Canada in 1930 he was fifth in seniority. He retired to Embro in 1939, living on the estate of his grandfather Donald Matheson, the founder of the village of Embro
