Administrative history
About 1950 Stuart Keyes began an architectural and engineering firm, Stuart N. Keyes, at 34 Market Street in Orillia. He had graduated from the University of Toronto in 1934, and acquired experience in cities across Canada. Keyes decided to work in Orillia because of the number of factories which were in and around the town. As the business grew, additional employees were hired.
During its prime, Stuart N. Keyes & Associates Ltd. employed a draftsman, engineer, and secretary/clerk. Keyes created the designs for steel structures and frameworks, inspected building sites, and met with clients and contractors. For a time, the architect, Mr. Sinclair, worked with the business. It was not necessary for an architect to be a permanent member of the staff as Mr. Keyes was qualified to do both architectural and building plans. The firm's activities included creating the architectural designs and engineering plans for the construction of buildings in Orillia and the surrounding area. During the late 1980s and early 1990s Stuart N. Keyes & Associates Ltd. reduced the extent of its activities. By 1995 the business, again known as Stuart N. Keyes, had ceased operations.
Custodial history
The building in which Stuart N. Keyes & Associates Ltd. always operated was originally constructed as a private home. It was remodeled, and additions made to better house the business. The Stuart N. Keyes & Associates records remained in the custody of the firm's founder until 1997, when they were donated to the Simcoe County Archives.
