Biographical history
Stephen McKenna (1888-1967), author, was born in England and educated at Oxford University (MA 1914). His writing career was launched in 1912 with the publication of 'The reluctant lover'. He produced several novels of manners which were popular in the United Kingdom between the wars. An inveterate traveller, McKenna was in Africa, South America and the Caribbean during the 1920s and 1930s. He is the author of 'Sonia,' (1917), 'The education of Eric Lane,' (1921), 'The magic quest,' (1933), and several other titles.
Custodial history
The collection was purchased by York University Libraries form Bertram Rota Ltd. in 1970, and transferred to the Archives and Special Collections in 1976.
Scope and content
The collection consists of bound typescripts of diaries, many with photographs included, of Stephen McKennas travels in South America, the Caribbean, North Africa, France and other countries (1921-1933). There are also typescripts and carbon copies of four plays he composed, including 'Ninety-six hours' leave,' (1917), short stories and articles, some in draft form, other clipped from magazines, and scrapbooks of serialized novels which appeared in newspapers and magazines. In addition, there are photographs of locales he had visited.
