Administrative history
The House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence was established in 1986 as a result of the Canadian parliamentary reforms implemented during the 1980s. The Standing Committee inherited the responsibility of examining defence policy from the Standing Committee on External Affairs and National Defence. There was also a Standing Committee on National Defence during 1966-1967. In 1989, veterans issues were added to the mandate of the Committee, and it was renamed the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs.
