. (Joseph) Bascom St. John (1906-1983), journalist and civil servant, was born and educated in Ontario. He began his journalism career in 1929 with the Montreal 'Star,' writing a column and editing a farm publication. In 1945 he joined the 'Globe and Mail' as an editorial writer. His reputation was made by the column, 'The world of learning,' a daily feature in the 'Globe and Mail' from 1958 until 1964. In the latter year, St. John joined the Ontario Department of Education as chair of its Policy and Development Council. In 1971 he became special assistant to the Deputy Minister of Education, retiring in 1973. Along with his journalism and magazine writing, St. John was the author of, 'Spotlight on Canadian education,' (1959).
