Custodial history
Most of the sound recordings were acquired prior to 1989 and were dealt with as an artificial collection as opposed to being organized by provenance. As a result, and due to the lack of complete accession records, provenance is often unknown. As the sound recordings were acquired, they were given a collection number (19) and a sequential item number (001, 002, etc.).
Scope and content
The Sound Recording Collection, C 27, is arranged and described at the item level. This collection consists of 542 analog sound recordings captured on various formats. The formats included ¼" and 2"open reels, ¼" cassettes and NAB cartridges, and 8 Tracks and long playing records.
The collection documents the annual Canadian National Exhibition during the years 1888 to 1991. It also includes some non-CNE-period videos pertaining to the upkeep and development of Exhibition Place, and the off-season use of the grounds.
The sound recordings focus primarily on the annual Canadian National Exhibition and its events. The highlights of these recordings are Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Directors Luncheon speeches, Grandstand stage shows, the Canadian International Air Show, Radio promos and programming, sporting and musical events and interviews with CNE officials and special guests.
Other non-CNE recordings are of the Board of Governors and Metro Toronto Council meetings regarding by-laws and special announcements for Exhibition Place.
