    Biografie

    Iva Campbell Fallis (1883-1956) was a Conservative party campaign organizer and Canadian senator. Born in Castleton, Northumberland County, he was the daughter of Jessie Stewart and Michael John Doyle. She attended the Toronto Normal School and was a school teacher for five years. She married Howard Taylor Fallis in 1909. Iva Fallis was active in local politics. She was the first president of the Peterborough Conservative Women's Association, appointed in 1923. She campaigned actively for provincial and national politicans. Mrs Fallis was vice president of the Canadian Conservative Party Association. She was a key member of the campaign team that helped elect R.B. Bennett Prime Minister of Canada in 1930. Iva Fallis was appointed to the Senate by Bennett in 1935. She was only the second woman to be appointed to the Senate. On committees, in public engagements and speeches, Senator Fallis championed women's issues, human rights, Senate reform old age security, censorship and equality for men and women.

    Geschiedenis beheer

    Fonds was originally owned by Senator Iva Fallis. After her death in March 1956 it was under the care of her husband Howard Fallis. Eventually the material was owned by the donor's family. The donor's husband (Hugh Fallis) was a nephew to Senator Fallis.

    Bereik en inhoud

    Fonds consists of material relating to the career of Conservative Senator Iva Campbell Fallis of Peterborough. Include are: Letters Patent on vellum, with the Great Seal of Canada, appointing Iva Campbell Fallis to the Senate of Canada (August 1935); illuminated certificate extending Senator Fallis, "Freedom of the City of Peterborough" by City Council (1937); a large photograph of a joint session in the Senate chamber, on the occassion of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, granting Royal Assent to new legislation (May 19, 1939); a large studio portrait of Senator Fallis in formal gown (1935 circa); 25 issues of Hansard which contain transcripts of Senator Fallis' speeches, debates and committee work. Issues discussed include: income tax issues for married women working outside the home (1945), women as 'persons' (1949), human rights (1949), Senate reform (1951) and censorship of 'salacious' literature (1953); Roy Studio photograph of the laying of the cornerstone for Peterborough's Civic Hospital (1950); other material includes Senator Fallis' marriage certificate, passport (1954), assorted family photographs, letter to Senator Fallis from Hollywood movie star Mary Pickford thanking the Senator for public remarks made when Pickford visited Peterborough on a Victory Bonds campaign stop in 1943.
