Administrative history
The Salem Women’s Institute in Grey County, Ontario, was active from 1914 to 1990 and served an area of Derby Township (now part of Georgian Bluffs Township) just south-west of Owen Sound. This area was roughly bordered by: the Sullivan township line (Grey Road 16) in the south, Grey Road 5 in the north (Waverly Heights), Grey Road 18 in the west and Inglis Falls Road in the east. In the mid-1930s, the wife of Lord Tweedsmuir, Governor General of Canada from 1935 – 1940, suggested that all Women’s Institutes create local history books, which became known as the Tweedsmuir histories. The Salem branch participated in this project.
