Administrative history
The Royal Canadian Air Force Historical Section was created after the Second World War and was small, with a maximum of five people on staff. The staff contributed to the RCAF magazine Roundel, and answered inquiries. When the three services unified in 1968, the RCAF Historical Section became part of the new Directorate of History under Colonel Charles P. Stacey, the former head of the Canadian Army Historical Section.

Scope and content
Collection consists of information cards created by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Historical Section, and regarding RCAF deserters, RCAF fatal casualties and prisoners of war, and Mention in Despatches (MID) for Canadian airmen for the Second World War. Also includes cards for RCAF aircrew that were granted Operation Wing Tour awards during the Second World War. The cards contain information such as name, service number, dates, honours, awards, decorations, medals, and fate of the airman. The cards are arranged alphabetically. There are four series: Fonds is comprised of the following series:
I. Royal Canadian Air Force Deserters (1939-1945)
II. Fatal Casualties and Prisoners of War in the Second World War (1939-1945)
III. Mention-in-Despatches - Canadian Airmen (1940-1946)
IV. Operation Wings Tour Awards (1944-1949)
