Administrative history
Rhombus Media Inc. was formed in 1978 at the York University Film Department, when Barbara Willis Sweete and Niv Fichman created, Opus One, Number One, a documentary short that established the company's musical direction. Larry Weinstein joined soon after, and the trio have since produced and directed numerous television programs, including Ravel, For the Whales, When the Fire Burns: The Life and Music of Manuel de Falla, Prokofiev by Two, Le Dortoir, Canadian Brass: Home Movies, Pictures on the Edge, and My War Years: Arnold Schoenberg. Rhombus Media has become known as Canada's leading independent producer of television programs on the performing arts. The company is recognized around the world for producing consistently high-quality programs that have been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. It has received nominations for many international awards and has won an International Emmy for Le Dortoir in 1991, an International Emmy for Pictures on the Edge (1992), and 4 Canadian Genie Awards, including Best Motion Picture in 1993, for Thirty-Two Short Films about Glenn Gould. In recent years Rhombus projects have been internationally co-produced with many of the major European television networks. Rhombus International, headed by Sheena Macdonald, overseas this co-production activity, and is responsible for the distribution of all Rhombus television productions throughout the world.
