    Administrative history

In 1947, Dr. Florence McConney learned of the Strang Cancer Prevention Clinic, which had been established in New York in 1937. She believed a similar clinic should be opened at Women's College Hospital. The idea was met with strong support, and the project received funding from the Women's College Hospital Board of Governors and the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation.

On April 7, 1948, the Cancer Detection Clinic opened in the Outpatient Department of Women's College Hospital. It was the first clinic of its kind in Ontario: at the time, screening for early signs of cancer in "well" women was unheard of.

The Cancer Detection Clinic was very popular. By 1950, 2,145 women had been examined in the clinic and there were over 2,000 women on the waiting list. In May 1950, the Cancer Detection Clinic moved to a new, larger facility that had the capacity to examine 200 women each month.

By 1965, provincial health care and private health insurance plans began to pay for part of the cost of the examination at the Cancer Detection Clinic. The Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation subsidized the operating deficit, and would continue to do so until 1978. After 1978, patients were charged a fee.

In 1966, the Cancer Detection Clinic again moved to a larger facility on Bay Street, where they could see 500 women each month. The Cancer Detection Clinic moved yet again in 1980, this time to Burton Hall across the street from Women's College Hospital. By 1990, the clinic examined over 5,000 patients each year.

In 1994, the Cancer Detection Clinic was renamed Health Watch in response to an expanded focus on health promotion and education. Health Watch provided women with a comprehensive service, in partnership with their primary-care physician.

Health Watch was closed in 2010.
