    Biographical history

Ray Lawson (1886-1977) was a businessman from London, Ontario, who served as Lieutenant Governor of Ontario between 1946 and 1952 and as Canadian Consul General in New York between 1953 and 1955.

Frank Ray Lawson was born on 30 August 1886 in London, Ontario, the son of Frank Edward Lawson and Lorene Hodgins. His father, a partner in Lawson & Jones Limited, was a manufacturer of printed materials for druggists. At that time the family lived in Westminster Township, Middlesex County, Ontario.

While working as a commercial traveller, Ray married Helen Agnes Newton, a teacher, on 30 June 1909 in Parkhill, Ontario. They had moved to Montreal by 1911, at which time Lawson was employed in the printing industry as an agent for his father's company.

He soon became chairman of Lawson & Jones Limited, and later served as president or vice president of a number of other companies as well. He held the position of Lieutenant Governor of Ontario between 1947 and 1951 and was Canadian Consul General in New York between 1953 and 1955. As Consul General, Lawson began an initiative to establish Canada House in New York, a building intended to house the consulate as well as the New York branches of other Canadian agencies, institutions, and businesses. Ray Lawson died in 1977.

    Custodial history

    Scope and content

Fonds consists of photographs, films, speeches, correspondence, and other records created or received by Ray Lawson, and representing his public, private, and business affairs.

The fonds' contents exist in a variety of formats. Photographs show Lawson and others at official and private events. A film depicts Lawson engaging in official functions as Lieutenant Governor. Lawson made numerous speeches as Lieutenant Governor and as Canada's Consul General in New York City. Many of these speeches are contained in the fonds and are arranged chronologically.

The correspondence primarily consists of letters and telegrams to Lawson from political and business associates, as well as from his friends and family. Much of the correspondence congratulates Lawson on becoming an Officer of the British Empire in 1943 and on being appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in December, 1946. Subject files include documents relating to Canada House (the building that housed the Canadian consulate in New York), a guestbook kept in the Lawson household between 1922 and 1948, and other materials related to Lawson's activities and interests.
