The Port Hope Hospital was first established in the two story brick house formerly belonging to the McLean family, at the corner of Hope and Ward Streets. In 1915, plans were underway to build the new hospital, with the cornerstone being laid on October 8, 1915. The official opening of the new hospital was held on June 29, 1916. The building cost $31,500 to build, only $2000 had to be borrowed. The nurses training school was established soon after its opening. In 1929, the west wing of the hospital was completed, providing 25 additional beds, X-ray and laundry room. A new hospital opened in the 1960s, and merged with the Cobourg hospital to create the new Northumberland Hills (located in Cobourg) in 1999-2000.
Geschiedenis beheer
Fonds was donated to the Ganaraska Region Archives on an indefinite-term loan, 2000. The records were brought to the archives on behalf of the Board of Trustees of the hospital as a result of a motion passed at a Board of Trustees Meeting. Artifacts donated to the archives by the Board were transferred to the East Durham Historical Society for inclusion in Dorothy's House Museum, 2002.

Series consists of various certificates and plaques awarded to individuals and the Port Hope & District Hospital for achievement. It includes: (1) Training School for Nurses - Mabel Ball Nursing Degree, 20 Aug 1919; (2) Appreciation Certificate to the Hospital Auxiliary for contribution to the community from the OMA and the Northumberland Medical Society; (3) Accreditation of the Port Hope & District Hospital, 1988 and 1993; (4) Congratulating the hospital on its 80th anniversary - citations from Jean Chretien, Christine Stewart (MP), Joan Fawcett, and Brian Mulroney; (5) Mounted certificate from the Canadian Police Association - Public Service Award. Series also includes various plaques; additional box listing is available.
