Administrative history

The Port Hope & District Historical Society was founded as the East Durham Historical Society in 1964, with Michael Wladyka serving as its inaugural president. Originally, the office of the EDHS was housed in the old fire hall, located on Walton Street in downtown Port Hope. After the 1980 flood, which devastated downtown Port Hope, the EDHS created Dorothy's House Museum in Garden Hill. The building which houses the museum is a house which was built in 1869.
Their vision is: "To keep alive and bring to life, for young and old, and to preserve for generations to come, the History and Heritage of our Region through meetings, lectures, displays, presentations and other functions and to involve other Heritage Groups as well as elementary, high school and university students in these activities; and to maintain and operate Dorothy's House Museum as a display case of a workman's family and life-style in the mid 19th century."
