Administrative history

Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal is a play development organization and professional theatre centre with a mandate to support Canadian playwrights from initial idea through final draft. The oldest play development centre in Canada, PWM was established in 1963 in response to the scarcity of Canadian playwrights and the lack of dramaturgical support for them. It has helped develop play scripts from across the country, employing directors, actors and dramturgs fluent in at least two languages. PWM utilizes reading, workshops and dramaturgy to understand play development and to provide playwrights with professional analysis of their work. Since its founding, it has assisted with the plays of such talents as George F. Walker, Carol Bolt, Maryse Pelletier and Tomson Highway. PWM takes in more than 200 scripts every year and provides development assistance for more than 50 plays.
