James Smith was born in Arbroath, Scotland in 1893. He immigrated to Canada in 1923 and moved to Levack, Ontario in 1924. In 1925, Smith worked in Coniston, Ontario and returned to Scotland in 1926. The following year, Smith returned to Levack and after several moves, made Levack, Ontario his home from 1937 until retirement. After retirement in 1959, James Smith and his wife Betty Law Smith relocated to Waubaushene, Ontario.
