Arreglo
The Sudbury Star changed its photographic negative filing system at least four times. The earliest images from the newspaper were glass plate negatives. None of these images have survived.
The earliest surviving negatives are primarily acetate negatives. Starting with the Royal Visit in 1939, the negatives appear to have been filed by event number followed by image number.
From 1941 until May 1956, the photographic negatives were given file numbers based on the envelopes in which they were stored. After developing the film, the photographer would place the negatives inside envelopes and write a number on the envelope. Next, he would write a corresponding envelope or file number on each negative with a negative number as well (e.g. 454-10). The photographer would then create an index (the Star photographers referred to these indexes as "sheets") for the negatives which included the name of the event with the envelope or file number on the top, followed by each file-item number and corresponding descriptions of each image (including the names of all individuals in each image from left to right). None of these "sheets" have survived. Occasionally, the Star created copies of older negatives and re-filed them using this format.
From June 1956 to the present, the images are filed based on a two digit year/month system with each negative also provided with an image number (e.g. 56/6 202 or 56-6-202).
