Biographical history
Peter Charlton (1931- ) served with the Royal Canadian Navy, and was the Project Manager for the CX-84 Tilt Wing V/STOL Project during 1968-1980. Born in Gillingham, England, he served in the Royal Navy from 1949 to 1958 as both a Marine and Aeronautical Engineer Officer in England, Korea and the Mediterranean, before serving in the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Armed Forces from 1958 to 1980. Notably, he was appointed Project Manager for the CX-84 Tilt Wing V/STOL Project in 1968, and Deputy Chief of Staff Leadership and Support Training in 1971. He became Director Aerospace Engineering and Maintenance in 1975, Director Aircraft Engineering and Maintenance in 1976 and Director General Aerospace Engineering and maintenance in 1976, a position he held until 1980. He held senior positions at Vice Presidential level in the Canadian Industry between 1980 and 1989 when he formed his own consultants firm. As a Canadian Naval Aviation Technical History (CNATH) project member he contributed a lot of material.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of files (1970-1980) pertaining to the CX-84 Tilt Wing V/STOL Aircraft used by Peter Charlton when he was CX-84 Tilt Wing V/STOL Project Manager and Director General Aerospace Engineering and Maintenance. There are also seven reports from the Royal Canadian Navy Experimental Squadron Ten concerning helicopter haul down and handling systems during the 1960s. Includes a report of a voyage to the Canadian Arctic by CCDG John A. Macdonald in 1969., a monograph by Charlton re Sea king helicopters and the RCN destroyers during 1962-1966, and copies of the "Canadian Aeronautics and Space Journal". Also includes an autobiography and family history of the Charltons, 1 videocassette and 1 film reel regarding helicopters entitled "CHSS-2 Haul Down System", and 1 videocassette entitle "EH-101 Passing the Torch".

Immediate source of acquisition
The first accession consisting of six files of the 1970-1980 files were received from Peter Charlton on 7 October 1992. The second accession, consisting of 7 reports, 2 videocassettes and 1 film reel was received from Peter Charlton in 2003. The third accession consisting of an autobiography and family history of the Charltons was received 29 May 2018 from Peter Charlton.
