    Biografie

Paul Harrington (1898-1966) was a dentist and amateur oologist from Toronto, Ontario. Born February 17, 1898, Harrington had a particular interest in warblers, and undertook many expeditions to look for nesting birds in various parts of Ontario, most notably the Georgian Bay area. In 1936-1937, he published a monograph in the distribution of breeding birds in Ontario; it was considered the main reference on the subject until the 1970s. Harrington died on August 29, 1966, in Toronto.

    Bereik en inhoud

Fonds consists of eight volumes of Harrington’s bird notes. Five volumes are chronological field journals, while two are arranged by bird. One volume is devoted to bird sightings in Wasaga Beach, Ontario. The field journals give notes on the species that were observed, in addition to information of the number of eggs collected, how common a species is in the area, lists of birds observed and collected in various areas, and maps showing where birds were observed. The two volumes that are organized by bird are not in taxonomic order. These two volumes give information about the location where a nest was found, the date, how many eggs were collected out of the total number in the nest, and occasionally more detailed notes on bird behaviour and the nests. The volume on Wasaga Beach includes a map of the area covered by Harrington, and the notes are organized chronologically. This volume contains information on the species of bird observed, how many of each species were seen, the number of eggs collected, as well as some more detailed notes on bird behaviour or fishing expeditions.
