The Patient Education Committee was established in September 1981 by R.S. Bush. The date of the first meeting of the Patient Education Committee was October 19, 1981. The Patient Education Committee was responsible for developing and monitoring policies for evaluating the need of patients for information about their illness, treatment, outcomes and the support services available.
The Patient Education Committee met at least six times a year; and reported to the Medical Advisory Committee at least twice a year.
Initially the Patient Education Committee membership included one representative from each of the following departments: Administration, Radiation Oncology, Department of Medicine, Inpatient Nursing, Outpatient Nursing, Clinical Trials Nursing, PMH Lodge, Radiation Therapy, Pharmacy, and Nutrition.
After revisions in 1993 membership included: the chair (MAC appointed), Patient Education Specialist, Canadian Cancer Society Volunteer one representative each from Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Social Work, Radiation Therapy, Nutrition, Pharmacy, PMH Lodge, PMH Public Relations, Clinical Trials Nursing, Senior Administration, and Nursing.
C. Johnston was the chair of the Patient Education Committee from 1981 to 1983. Subsequent chairs of the Patient Education Committee were P. Finnegan (1983-1984), P. Payne (1984-1987), J. Curtis (1987-1988), S. Sutcliffe (1988-1989), R. Clark (1989-1995), and S. Burlein-Hall who was Acting Chair in 1995.

Series consists of correspondence, reports on patient education and minutes of the Patient Education Committee from 1981 to 1982. This material had been kept in a binder, within which correspondence, reports and, minutes were filed in reverse chronological order. The files have been arranged chronologically by date.
