    Administrative history

A group of retired teachers living in the Napanee area formed the Napanee Branch of the Ontario Association of Superannuated Women Teachers in 1974. The objective was to keep members informed of pension changes and available benefits as well as providing fellowship and forming a contact between older members and new retirees. Meetings were in the form of luncheons and were held twice a year. The name of the provincial association was changed to the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario in 1999. One of the most accomplished members was Margaret Stewart Mitchell. Miss Mitchell was a home child, born in Glasgow and sent out to Canada where she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Dunwoody of Newburgh. They provided Margaret Mitchell with a good education. She became a public school teacher, then completed a Bachelor’s degree at Queen’s University and taught High School. Her great contribution to local education was recognized by a Queen’s Coronation Medal in 1953. After retirement, Margaret Stewart Mitchell was a founder of the Newburgh Golden Age Club, as well as the Napanee Branch of the Ontario Association of Superannuated Women Teachers.
