The Northway-Gestalt Corporation was an aerial photographic survey company based in the Toronto, Ontario area.
It was formed out of a number of amalgamations, mergers and name changes of predecessor companies, beginning with the Toronto-based Photographic Survey Company, which began in 1946 under the direction of Douglas M. Kendall, with British financing from Sir Percy Hunting. From 1956-1965, the company was known as Hunting Survey Corporation, Ltd., later known as Lockwood Survey Corporation, Ltd. from 1965-1972. From 1972-1975 the company was called Northway Survey Corporation, Ltd., and then Northway- Gestalt Corporation Ltd. from 1975-1984. The company has been named Northway Map Technology Ltd. since 1985.
In 1946 the Photographic Survey Company provided an aerial survey of 125,000 square miles of land in Ontario, including all accessible forest land. Later, the company employed the use of the Gestalt photo mapper.
Custodial history
Fonds was donated to the Archives of Ontario in 1980 and 1985 by Spar Aerospace Ltd.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of low-level oblique aerial photographs undertaken by Northway - Gestalt and their predecessors for a variety of clients.
The photographs are black-and-white photonegatives and colour transparencies of low-level oblique aerial images. These images include stock shots of various geographical regions throughout Ontario for aerial survey purposes as well as for speculative and publicity purposes, such as companies who wanted to document the physical expansion of their plant. Most of the photos are of Ontario, especially in the Toronto area, but a small number are outside the province.
The photographs are arranged in a numbering system devised by Northway Gestalt. The numbering system groups together photographs taken on a particular flight, and within that, groups together images by geographic location and subject.
