Administrative history
Native Earth Performing Arts was founded in 1982 by Denis Lacroix and Bunny Sicard to develop and present Aboriginal theatre, dance, and music. Breaking new ground, early productions were collective works, written by the actors in the company. The annual play festival, “Weesageechak Begins to Dance, was established in 1989 to develop new works by Native Canadians which then go on into full production. Government funding was secured in 1986 allowing NEPA to hire new playwright Tomson Highway as artistic director. This established it as a leading producer of Native Canadian theatre arts.
