Administrative history
The Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) was established as a non-United Nations observation force following the signing of the Israel-Egypt peace treaty in 1980. The force mans electronic listening posts and patrols roads and other strategic locations in the Sinai Peninsula to ensure that the provisions of the treaty respecting the limiting of troops in the Sinai is observed. Canadian personnel have been a part of the MFO since its inception.
Custodial history
Scope and content
Series consists of records collected by Alan James concerning the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) from 1979 to 1990. The Nuffield Grant obtained by Alan James in the early 1980s was used to finance an article entitled “Politics of Peacekeeping in the 1980s,” which was published in 1983. The series also contains newspaper articles about the MFO written by Alan James in 1984, as well notes from meetings with MFO personnel. The Annual Reports of the Director General of the MFO from 1983 to 1990 are also contained in the series.
