Biographical history
The McVicars were one of Thunder Bay's pioneering families. Robert McVicar (1799?-1864) was Chief Trader in the Hudson's Bay Co. and, after retiring in the 1850s, settled in the Thunder Bay region. His son George and daughters, Victoria and Christina McVicar, played important roles in the growth of the early Lakehead. Robert claimed the property at the mouth of McVicar's creek and 50 acres of land were eventually granted to his wife. Christina and Victoria secured 600 acres in Prince Arthur's Landing for 20 cents an acre and considerable property was held in what was later central Fort William from about the 1870s until Christina’s death in 1895 when Victoria (d. 1899) succeeded her. George was involved in local mining enterprises (Shuniah Mine) and held plenty of local property. The family is noted for having dictated policy to the CPR regarding the positioning of local terminals and railway stations.
